Nutrition

Did you know that the nutritional quality of fruits and vegetables starts decreasing the day it is harvested? Eating fresh produce closer to harvest time is better for your family. That's why we encourage families to grow their own and support local farms effectively increasing the nutrition in their diet.  Purchasing freshly picked produce is getting easier and easier with all the resources available to home gardeners and the influx of small vegetable farms around the country.

Seasonality

Eating in season means the fresh produce, meat and grains you eat are grown and harvested for consumption or storage in the proper season. For example, Alabama's strawberry season lasts mid-April to mid-June. Another example is lettuce season ranges in Alabama from late summer through late fall and into the winter if grown under cover and again in late winter through late Spring. We are very luck in Alabama to have such mild weather. Kale and other greens can grow through our mild winter because they can tolerate a hard frost.
