The style we learned at last year’s conference has brought us to the next growing season. The material will be sifted and added to planters for summer produce. Cover cropping with legumes like vetch and peas adds nitrogen to the soil. With the added bonus of delicious pea tendrils. With a goal of good soil health, keeping the ground covered ranks very high on the farmer’s priorities. Without anything growing, the soil life decreases dramatically and you have to start over. This bed will be cleared, unveiling a rich living soil, and a 1/2 inch compost will be raked into the bed before transplanting the summer vegetables. In the spring and summer you’ll find cosmos, marigolds, dyer’s camomile, black knight scabiosa, madder, safflower, amaranth, and more. The dye garden is also a great spot to find butterflies, bees, wasps, and other beneficial insects. This garden is grown in the farm soil because these are not food plants. I often think about this study I read in school. The researchers had taken samples of a landfill near Los Angeles, like the ice cores taken from the arctic, and found banana peels and hot dogs alike completely intact. Does it rot? If all of your garbage goes into a plastic bag, then is compressed between layers of rock and dirt, does it rot? The answer is no. Public perception of a landfill may be a range of scenarios. Some may know that their trash does indeed get mummified inside of the earth. And some may think of seagulls flocking to mountains of trash. In many cases they’re wrong. And that is because the average person does not visit the landfill. And if they do, I doubt they are taking samples from the place. We are disconnected from our garbage. What the study revealed to me was a complex set of challenges and a new vantage point for looking at and presenting solutions to an ongoing set of circumstances. Bashira Chowdhury, trained researcher, noticed a lack of infrastructure for Alabama’s small farmers. She reached out to Caylor Rolling, farm manager of EAT South, to discuss vegetables and community building. The two decided it would be great to start a vegetable trial to find the right vegetable cultivars that would grow in Alabama. Fabia Hossain, a South-Asian marketing intern, joined the project. Immediately, Bashira and Fabia connected through their heritage of being second generation Bangladeshis and reminisced on their childhoods eating their parents' cultural dishes. They started to focus on the South Asian community-- a vegetable eating community and a growing community in Alabama. Without a good source for locally made quality compost, small farms and container gardens struggle to thrive. Quality compost provides a boost to the living soil ecosystem that supports plant growth. We are currently building out a pocket park at the Tuskegee Urban Agriculture Innovation Center (TUAIC, 595 Grady St.) that will include raised beds and a living learning Community Composting site. Sign up for composting services today for as little as $0.10 per pound. We provide you with an up-cycled bucket and a drop off or bucket swap. Our drop-off points are located at the compost site at the TUAIC, (595 Grady St.) and the Montgomery Curb Market (1004 Madison Ave.) in Montgomery.
